 |  Birch, Paper, Canoe Birch              Betula papyrifera
 
 A very popular landscape tree.  Pyramidal shape            when young becoming irregular to oval when mature.
 
 Leaves are dark green            oval with paler green undersides and turn bright yellow in fall.  Bark            is smooth, reddish brown on young trees becoming gleaming white as tree            matures.  Is the whitest of all birches.  The bark peels in papery layers            revealing the inner bark which is orange-brown.
 
 Can be grown as single            trunk or multi-trunk.  Very cold tolerant, it is good for cold climates.             Does not tolerate heat, drought or harsh conditions.  Prefers cool, moist            soil.
 
 Excellent as accent, specimen or grouping in borders, lawns, parks,            campuses, etc.  Also great besides streams and ponds.
 
 Often used for            erosion control for stream banks.
