Holly, Winter Berry

Holly, Winterberry
Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red'

A very popular, deciduous holly that produces bright red berries in profusion in early fall while the leaves are still green.  It's dense branching forms an erect, upright, rounded shrub.

The berries remain on the plant after leaf drop well into winter.  The lack of leaves on the plant make the berry display even more showy.

Summer leaves are lustrous dark green turning bronze then yellow in the fall.  Small, white flowers produced in June are not particularly showy.

This is a female plant and needs a male plant to pollinate it for berry production.

The berries attract winter songbirds and the berried stems are often used in seasonal dried arrangements.

Tolerates wet, swampy conditions and poorly drained soils.
