Lilac, Old Fashioned
Syringa vulgaris

An old and much loved favorite.  Extremely fragrant and showy panicles of purple flowers are 5-6 inches long.  It is a large, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub with an upright rounded to irregular shape.  Foliage is dark green and heart-shaped.  Very hardy and easy to grow.

Excellent as a specimen shrub, hedge, or screen (plant 4-6 feet apart).  Needs full sun for best flowering.

Prefers well-drained, slightly alkaline soil, but tolerates a wide range of soil types including heavy soil.
