Betula papyrifera

A very popular landscape tree. Pyramidal shape when young becoming irregular to oval when mature.

Leaves are dark green oval with paler green undersides and turn bright yellow in fall. Bark is smooth, reddish brown on young trees becoming gleaming white as tree matures. Is the whitest of all birches. The bark peels in papery layers revealing the inner bark which is orange-brown.

Can be grown as single trunk or multi-trunk. Very cold tolerant, it is good for cold climates. Does not tolerate heat, drought or harsh conditions. Prefers cool, moist soil.

Excellent as accent, specimen or grouping in borders, lawns, parks, campuses, etc. Also great besides streams and ponds.

Often used for erosion control for stream banks.
