Birch, River
Betula nigra

River Birch are very popular for its distinctive bark which peels and gives the trunk a shaggy appearance revealing colors from creamy-gray, light orange, reddish brown to black.  Leaves are dark green turning yellow in fall.

Tree is pyramidal to oval shape when young, becoming more rounded with age.  An excellent tree for low, swampy areas. Can tolerate standing water for several weeks at a time.

Adapts well to urban areas.  Native to the eastern United States.

This variety is highly resistant to birch borer and also very heat tolerant.

Zone: 4-9 Height: 40-50 ft. Spread: 25-30 ft.

Fast growing Good for wet areas but will do fine in ordinary soil.
