False Dragonhead (purple) Physostegia virginiana
Prospers almost anywhere. Erect stems bear willow-like, dark green leaves and delicate spikes of buds that look like they are never going to bloom. Then suddenly, they erupt with snapdragon-like flowers. Blooms late summer though the fall. Helps extend the life of the season with floral color. Needs to be divided occasionally. Forms thick patches that can be used as a tall groundcover.
