Hardy evergreen with good needle retention.  In youth, irregular pyramidal shape becoming widespread, open, craggy and picturesque with age.

Green to blue-green needle color.  Bark on lower tree gray-brown, but on upper tree peels to show orange-red color that is especially striking.

Very adaptable and hardy.  Performs well in sandy or gravely soils.  Tolerates poor, dry and windy conditions.

Use as single specimen, windbreak or screening, mass plantings in large areas.  Is also good for difficult sites and reclamation areas.
